The Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center was founded in February 1945 as a civilian hospital known as Philippine Civil Affairs Unit or PCAU. On December 3, 1982 pursuant to Executive Order No.851, it was designated as Department of Health’s medical center in line with their Hospital Development Project. On January 31, 1987, Executive Order No. 119 was signed by President Corazon C. Aquino the integration and absorption into JRRMMC of the National Cancer Control Center. Thus, the birth of this institution’s Department of Radiotherapy with Dr. Miriam Joy C. Calaguas as first department chairman catering to more than a hundred cancer patients daily from Classes C and D.

The first straight residency training program in Radiation Oncology was formed thereafter and is the only DOH hospital accredited by the Philippine Radiation Oncology Society since 1988. In 1990, Dr. Erwin Q. Vito Cruz was the first graduate of the said program and is currently the Chairman of the Department. To date, there are 27 doctors who completed their training in this institution. The department is also recognized as a training center in radiotherapy for medical physicists and radiation technologists.
